West Coast - Day 5

Well, I woke up sick again this morning. I guess the drugs from a couple days ago finally wore off. I took a bunch more drugs, skipped breakfast and managed to pack the car up and get on the road. It was a lot cooler this morning, only 12 degrees when we woke up, and the wind was still there, though not quite as bad as it had been yesterday. I somehow managed to survive the drive from Twin Falls to Wells, Nevada, where we stopped for lunch. We ate at a Burger King beside the interstate, and at one point while we were eating, we heard a bunch of sirens. A highway patrol car and an ambulance pulled in the Burger King parking lot and they were eventually followed by a couple of fire & rescue trucks and another patrol car. The rumors circulating among the staff were that the police had a checkpoint on the highway and had pulled a suspect through the glass of his car (not sure how you do that, but who am I to argue with rampant rumors?). Whatever happened, luckily for us, happened in the eastbound lane, as the police had it stopped and there was a quite a long line of cars and trucks parked on the road. The road heading west was clear and we had no problems leaving Wells.

Northern Nevada is very mountainous, but also very almost desert-like. There is nothing but small bushes growing and the entire place seems deserted. We ended up stopping in a tiny little town called Battle Mountain, just because I was getting very tired of driving and after passing six towns with no services, I was concerned that we would end up having to drive to Reno just to find a place to sleep. (I just checked Wikipedia, and apparently Battle Mountain was determined to be the "Armpit of America" by the Washington Post - great place to visit with your family, eh?)

The hotel had an outdoor pool, so after unpacking, we took the boys into the water. The big pool was unheated and the water was unbelievable cold, but the water in the hot tub wasn't too warm so we just played in it. After that, we went for lunch at a local pizza place next door to the hotel and then returned to our room to get the kids ready for bed. Today wasn't very exciting, but tomorrow we plan to head to Virginia City and explore it a bit.
